20 Sri Lankan Soldiers Killed In Fresh Fighting

Military officials in Colombo says an estimated 20 Sri Lankan soldiers were killed and another 100 injured in the northern peninsula of Jaffna on Saturday. Sri Lankan officials have launched an offensive against the LTTE, which aims to push the Tamil rebels back. On Friday, the Sri Lankan Air Force carried out an intense aerial bombardment against Tiger positions in the southern part of the peninsula, a news agency reported. A security official, adds, "The army has now advanced about a kilometer into territory previously occupied by the Tigers. This means we have taken their first line of defense."
