Reconstruction Continues Without Government Money
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - Lebanese have begun to reconstruct their lives and homes following the 34-day war between Hezbollah and Israel despite a lack of monetary funds from the central government. Beirut had promised to give citizens whose homes were destroyed in the war $33,000 but to date nothing has been disbursed. "It will cost me around $400,000 to $500,000 dollars. And I have gotten no aid," Abdul Karim Al Hussein, a wealthy landlord in Qana said of rebuilding his shops and four homes. For the less fortunate the government's money needs to arrive sooner rather than later. Hussein Mazraani told AFP that he is unsure whether the government will actually follow through on their promise to pay people. "Hezbollah said it was going to pay and I believe it. The state might pay too, but I haven't received anything," he said. Mazraani, like many in south Lebanon, has lost his home and is in desperate need for the funds to begin rebuilding his shattered life.
