Finland Announces Troop Deployment

Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - Finland has officially approved a 250 troop deployment to Lebanon as part of the expanded United Nations peacekeeping force in the country. Finnish President Tarja Halonen announced Friday that Finland had agreed to send the soldiers. According to the President the soldiers will mainly clear mines and set up bases. Also, a small intelligence unit will be deployed in early October and the remaining forces will be sent a month later. The estimated cost of the mission will be approximately $55 million during the coming fiscal year. Finland has provided 50,000 peacekeepers for missions across the globe in more than 20 missions since operations began in 1956. The Finnish soldiers will be a part of the revamped UN peacekeeping mission to Lebanon as obligated under the ceasefire resolution that ended the war between Hezbollah and Israel on August 14.
