Lufthansa To Resume Flights To Lebanon
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - German airline carrier Lufthansa will resume flights to Beirut on Saturday, ending a month plus long hiatus of flights to the Lebanese capital. Israel lifted an air blockade of their northern neighbor on Thursday after nearly eight weeks. The last flight Lufthansa flew into Beirut was on July 14 following the capture of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah guerrillas that triggered a 34-day war between the militant group and the Jewish state. Lufthansa had been participating in the evacuation of German citizens at the special request of the German foreign ministry throughout the war via Syria, Jordan and Cyprus. According to an airline spokesman the resumption of flights will take place on Saturday evening, as a flight will embark from Frankfurt for Beirut. Israel lifted the blockade on Thursday at 6 pm. Middle East Airlines, the national carrier of Lebanon, was the first airline to land at Rafiq Hariri International Airport. The pilot waved a Lebanese flag as they approached the gate.
