Coal Mine Explosion In India Kills 30, Traps 20 Others
Yvonne Lee - All Headline News Staff Reporter (AHN) - A coal mine explosion in the Indian state of Jharkhand trapped and killed 30 miners. Rescue workers are searching for more than 20 other people at the Bhatdih colliery. However, officials do not believe they will survive. Sources at Bharat Coking Coal Limited say that anyone who lived through the blast will have to deal with poisonous gases. High levels of carbon monoxide and methane gas have hampered rescue efforts in the 1,500-foot mine. Chairman Partha Bhattacharya tells Reuters, "This is an unprecedented situation and the chances of their survival are zero." Only five miners working at the upper levels of the mine walked away from the explosion. Nunu Lal, a miner who survived the blast, says, "The explosion was so powerful that I was thrown off my feet and I saw a trolley loaded with coal get ripped apart and break up." Officials are not certain what caused the explosion. Mine disasters are common in Jharkhand state, where underground fires have raged in the Jharia area since 1916.
