Natural Disasters In China Claim 830 Lives
Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Beijing, China (AHN) - An estimated 830 people were killed or went missing in a series of natural disasters which hit China in August, the government said Wednesday. According to the government, natural disasters such as typhoons and flooding were the main cause of the deaths. A Web site of China's civil affairs ministry said that typhoons, floods and droughts were responsible for the deaths of 661 people and 168 missing person in August. Typhoon Saomai, the most powerful storm to lashed at China in 50 years, and Typhoon Prapiroon, also displaced an estimated 130 million in August. The natural disasters resulted in the evacuation of over 3.1 million people, and causing $7.7 billion in economic losses. The ministry said the two storms battered seven provinces and regions which caused flooding and landslides that brought overwhelming damages. In July, natural disasters claimed the lives of 1,288 people, the ministry said.
