Philippines To Press For Release Of Suu Kyi At ASEAN Summit
Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Manila, Philippines (AHN) - Philippines Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alberto Romulo on Wednesday said Manila will press Myanmar to release opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi in the upcoming Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit which will be held in the province of Cebu, Philippines in December. Romulo made the statement at a hearing of the committee on appropriations at the House of Representatives as he reiterated the country's position to urge Myanmar "to follow the agreed roadmap to democracy." He said the roadmap includes the release of Suu Kyi with the hopes to allow her to participate in Myanmar's constitutional and democratic process. He told the committee, "The position of the Philippines has been constant and consistent and that is we urge Myanmar to follow the agreed roadmap to democracy. He continues, "That has been our position and that is the position that we will continue to pursue in the ASEAN summit."
