Indian PM Cautions That Terrorists Could Attack Economic, Nuclear Sites
Josephine Roque - All Headline News Staff Writer New Delhi, India (AHN) - Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh cautioned that Islamic militant groups could attack the nation's major sites. Recent reports pinpoint terrorist groups that reside in India's key cities and could be a threat to national security. "These are serious matters," Singh said. "This will require greater alertness on the part of the states and local intelligence." The prime minister's speech reflects the warnings said by India's defense minister and national security adviser after a string of train bombings in Mumbai that killed 207 people. The attacks have been attributed to Islamic militants based in Pakistan. Singh said, "Intelligence agencies warn of a further intensification of violent activities." He said the terrorists could use "suicide bombers," and launch "attacks on economic and religious targets," as well as "nuclear establishments, army camps and the like." India has accused Pakistan of supporting the training and funding of Islamic militants fighting in Kashmir. Kashmir is a Muslim Himalayan region that is claimed by both countries. Pakistan denies the charge, but acknowledges that it offers moral and political support to the rebels.
