Danish Police Arrest 9 Men Who Planned Terrorist Attack
Yvonne Lee - All Headline News Staff Reporter Odense, Denmark (AHN) - Police arrest nine men in a mainly immigrant neighborhood who are suspected of making explosives for a planned attack in Denmark. Seven of the men were arraigned on preliminary charges of planning a terror attack. Two of the nine men were released. Islamic Imam Abu Bashar says the suspects are Muslims. Odense officials did not say what the target was, or how far the plot had progressed. Lars Findsen, the head of the Danish Security Intelligence Service, says the men had amassed enough material "to build explosives in connection with the preparation of a terror act." Danish authorities went on high alert after Muslims were angered when caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad were published in a local newspaper. Justice Minister Lene Espersen says he does not know whether the planned attack was related to the cartoon incident in February. Following their publication, Western embassies were attacked by mobs in Muslim nations. Espersen tells The Associated Press, "The clues police found indicate that they were very likely planning an attack somewhere in Denmark." The suspects were Danish citizens between the ages of 18 to 33. All but one had immigrant backgrounds.
