Pakistan Signs Peace Deal With Pro-Taliban Fighters
Matthew Borghese - All Headline News Staff Writer Kabul, Afghanistan (AHN) - Pakistan has signed a deal with pro-Taliban militants in an effort to end years of fighting on the border. After hundreds have been killed in North Waziristan this year, Pakistan has agreed to reduce its military presence in exchange for militants to end cross-border attacks. Pakistan has deployed tens of thousands of soldiers to put down resisting tribal groups along the border with Afghanistan. Yet, all the fighting seems to have increased support for the radical Islamic Taliban, and the militants that fight on its behalf. According to the BBC, details of the deal signed by the two sides were given in a brief speech by local MP Haji Nek Zaman. Under the accord, the Pakistani military promises to end major operations in the area. Over the summer the military met other conditions, releasing a number of tribesmen and withdrawing soldiers from new check-posts. Local Taliban supporters, in turn, have pledged not to harbor foreign militants, launch cross-border raids or attack Pakistani government troops or facilities.
