35 Feared Drowned After Boat Sinks In Congo
Yvonne Lee - All Headline News Staff Reporter Kinshasa, DR Congo (AHN) - At least 35 people are feared dead after a boat sinks on a lake between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. Edouard Tamba Kakozi, president of the local association of ship owners, tells Reuters, "The accident ... was due to bad weather and bad loading of the boat, that's to say overloading." Authorities have recovered 13 bodies so far, seven of them children, from Lake Kivu. Boat accidents are common throughout the Congo, as water transport is often the only way to move cargo across long distances. Boats are frequently overloaded with people and goods, and are not sturdy enough for the amount of cargo.
