UN Chief Hopes Blockade Ends
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - Speaking in Egypt on Tuesday, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan said he hopes the blockade of Lebanon by Israel will come to an end in the next 48 hours. He was "positive" that this would happen. "I don't want to raise any false hopes, but I hope that in the next 48 hours we will have some news on that, constructive positive news," the UN chief told reporters following a meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in the port city of Alexandria. This announcement comes after Annan said on Monday he would appoint a secret convoy that would seek the release of two Israeli soldiers captured by Hezbollah on July 12, which sparked a 34-day war between the militant movement and the Jewish state. Annan has been on a whirlwind tour of the region as he seeks to garner support for the shaky truce between Hezbollah and Israel that went into effect August 14. He is to visit Ankara later Tuesday following a vote by Turkish parliament on whether to send troops to Lebanon.
