Annan Resolving Issues In Middle East

Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan held talks with Egyptian officials early Tuesday as he put forth efforts to have Israeli soldiers held captive in Palestine and Lebanon freed. Annan has been in the region recently in order to bolster support from nations to send troops to Lebanon as part of a ceasefire agreement that ended violence here August 14. Annan announced on Monday from Saudi Arabia that Israel and Hezbollah have agreed to come to the table in order to negotiate the release of two soldiers Hezbollah guerillas captured on July 12, which sparked a month-long war between the two parties. "Both parties have accepted the good offices of the secretary general to help resolve this problem," Annan said at a press conference in the Red Sea city of Jeddah, Monday. Also on his trip across the region, Qatar became the first Arab nation to announce the deployment of its troops to Lebanon. The gulf state has offered 250 soldiers to the UN mission in the country. Annan also added that he would appoint a special mediator to help resolve the prisoner debacle.
