DNA Tests Confirm Bones Are Those Of Missing Colombian Warlord
Yvonne Lee - All Headline News Staff Reporter Bogota, Colombia (AHN) - DNA tests confirm that bones recovered in northern Colombia are those of missing right-wing militia leader Carlos Castano. Castano's assassin confessed he murdered the paramilitary founder in 2004. He claims to have been guided by the victim's brother, Vicente Castano. Attorney General Mario Iguaran told reporters he was "99.99 percent sure" that that the bones are those of the murdered warlord. Prosecutors say Vicente Castano ordered the killing because he was afraid his brother would tell U.S. agents about their cocaine smuggling operation Since his brother's death, Vicente has helped negotiate the disbanding of 31,000 fighters in exchange for reduced sentences. He remains at large. President Alvaro Uribe has made it a priority to end Columbia's 40-year guerilla war. The Castano investigation could help in the extradition of militia bosses to the United States to face drug charges. Castano is wanted by U.S. authorities for cocaine smuggling.
