U.S. Marines Capture Hundreds Of Weapons In Iraqi Arms Cache
Matthew Borghese - All Headline News Staff Writer Baghdad, Iraq (AHN) - U.S. Marines on patrol in Iraq have captured a serious arms cache, capable of causing death to an untold number of civilians and military personnel in the country. Marines from the Regimental Combat Team 5 made the discovery during Operation Rubicon in Mushin, Iraq, west of Habbaniyah. According to the Pentagon, the Marines, assigned to 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment and 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, seized "more than 500 mortar rounds, nearly 100 artillery rounds, more than 130 rocket-propelled grenades, an excess of 120 grenades, 22 mines, 10 mortar tubes, 20 rifles and machine guns, 18 sets of body armor and various other items including binoculars and bayonets." Cpl. Brandon M. Stair a team leader who was among the group that discovered the cache sites admits, "This area was definitely an insurgent stronghold," adding the weapons were "stuff for the long fight, and they had stuff for tomorrow." Gunnery Sgt. Kenneth A. Westgate, explains, "Every cache was a separate set-up." According to Defense officials, one cache yielded 500 blasting caps, each one capable of detonating a single improvised explosive device (IED) while another cache yielded mortars.
