Seoul Resumes Boundary Talks With Tokyo
Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Seoul, South Korea (AHN) - South Korea and Japan have resumed their dialog over the disputed boundaries around a cluster of islets between the Korean Peninsula and Japan. The disputed islets are called Dokdo in Korean and Takeshima in Japanese. However, just like in their previous talks held in the 1990's, observers expect little in this new round of negotiations. Both countries agreed to continue their dialog after averting a high-seas showdown in April when Seoul launched 20 gun boats to stop a Japanese vessel from surveying the waters near the South Korea-controlled islets. Seoul accuses Japan of using the survey plan as a pretext to boost its territorial claim to the islets. The meeting in June failed to reach an agreement. The disputed islets lie roughly between the two countries and were believed to hold a huge deposit of methane hydrate, which can be used to produce natural gas. The area is also a rich source of marine resources.
