Qatar To Send Troops To Lebanon
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - On Monday Qatar announced it would be the first Arab nation to deploy troops to Lebanon as part of the expanded United Nations force in the country. The Gulf country said that it would contribute between 200 and 300 troops to the UN force in the South, however, Doha gave no timetable as to when troops would be deployed. The announcement came as UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan was in Doha for a visit with Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad Al Thani. Annan said that he hoped the expanded UN force would "be a manifestation of international solidarity." "We are using the UN influence to lift the embargo especially as Lebanon is trying to rebuild ... It has to be allowed to rebuild. I urge Israel to cooperate," the UN chief told reporters following his meeting with the foreign minister. Qatar maintains low-level ties with the Jewish state, despite being located in the rather conservative Arab gulf.
