UN: Israel Withdrawal Proceeding Well
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - The commander of the United Nations troops in southern Lebanon is confident that the Israeli withdrawal is proceeding well. He added that the border area would soon be under the control of the Lebanese army. His comments came after meeting with senior representatives of both the Lebanese and Israeli militaries, respectively. "The meeting was productive and I think we are on the right track in securing the full withdrawal of IDF from Lebanon and finally ensuring that the Lebanese army will take control of the whole border area in the south," Major-General Alain Pellegrini said in a statement. Since the shaky ceasefire that ended violence between Israel and Hezbollah went into effect on August 14, the Israeli military has been withdrawing from their positions in the southern portions of Lebanon. Under the resolution that ended the fighting, the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon will expand to up to 15,000 troops. Those soldiers will be joined by a same size contingent of Lebanese troops in order to prevent Hezbollah guerrillas from fighting with Israel.
