Palestinian Boy Shot During Teachers Strike
Ryan R. Jones - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Jerusalem, Israel (AHN) - A teachers strike in the Palestinian Authority-ruled town of Nablus Monday ended with a 12-year-old boy being shot and wounded by masked gunmen. Teachers in the PA territories have been on strike since Saturday - the start of the current school year - over unpaid wages. The Hamas-led government has been unable to pay salaries under crippling Western economic sanctions. In many towns throughout the West Bank, schools were kept closed by force, with masked gunmen belonging primarily to Fatah-affiliated terror groups preventing entry. As youngsters approached the entrance to the Nablus school, three gunmen opened fire into the air. Witnesses told the AP that a stray bullet struck Issam Ghannam, 12, in the abdomen. Doctors later said Ghannam was in stable condition after undergoing emergency surgery, and under observation at a local hospital. The boy's family, itself loyal to Fatah, refused to condemn the perpetrators.
