Israel Says No To Peace Talks With Syria
Ryan R. Jones - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Jerusalem, Israel (AHN) - Following the recent Israel-Hezbollah war, some international powers suggested Israel offer to restart peace negotiations with Syria over control of the Golan Heights. The offer, they said, would be an incentive for Damascus to play along with an arms embargo on Hezbollah. But Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni Sunday rejected that formula, noting that peace with Syria is for Israel a long-term strategic goal that must be based on the principles of security and coexistence. Livni told Israel's Channel 10 News that if Syria wants peace, it knows that it must first end long-standing support for Palestinian and Lebanese terror groups dedicated to the Jewish state's destruction. At any rate, she said, throwing Syria into the mix at this point would disrupt efforts to stabilize Lebanon. Livni cited past efforts to start talks with Syria at the height of negotiations with the Palestinians, only to see both processes fall apart.
