Malaysia Awaiting Word On Troops
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - Kuala Lumpur is awaiting a decision by the United Nations as to their offer to send peacekeeping troops to southern Lebanon. Malysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmed Badawi was quoted in the national news agency Bernama Saturday night saying his government is awaiting word from New York. "They have not made a decision," Badawi told Bernama. "But Malaysia is firm on its stand to send our peacekeepers once we get the call from the UN," Badawi added. His government has offered 1,000 troops to Lebanon, but Israel has objected to nations, such as Malaysia, that have no relations with the Jewish state. This comes just days after Indonesia announced Israel had dropped its objections of troops from the largest Muslim nation in the world. They are to send 1,000 troops by the end of the month. The revamped UN mission in Lebanon is to be increased to 15,000 troops, but thus far nations have been unwilling to contribute large numbers of troops due to the ambiguity of the mandate for the mission.
