Israel Thwarts West Bank Rockets
Ryan R. Jones - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Jerusalem, Israel (AHN) - Israel last week thwarted another Palestinian effort to begin producing rockets in and firing them from the West Bank at Israel's nearby major population centers. It was released for publication Saturday night that the elite counter-terrorism Yamam unit of Israel's Border Police arrested two senior members of the Fatah-affiliated Tanzim terror group in the town of Tulkarem. They were reportedly found together with a large weapons cache, including several rockets in the assembly stage and sacks of explosive materials. Security officials said the cell was financed and directed by Hezbollah. The captured terrorists were said to have been behind previous attempts to fire homemade rockets from Tulkarem at Greater Tel Aviv, an area densely populated by some two million Israelis. The center of rocket activity in the West Bank is also within range of Israel's Ben Gurion International Airport. The defense establishment has noted that as long as the IDF is largely in control of the West Bank, the threat is minimal and containable. But if Prime Minister Ehud Olmert succeeds in implementing his sweeping West Bank withdrawal, Palestinian rocket cells would gain the freedom to threaten the very heart of Israel, political opponents of the prime minister have warned.
