Syria Says: Israel Must Withdraw
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - Syria told UN chief Kofi Annan, Israel must withdraw from southern Lebanon and end its blockade of the country according to the United Nation's ceasefire agreement. "Talks underlined the necessity of preserving the ceasefire and the Israeli withdrawal from south Lebanon as well as lifting the maritime and air blockade imposed on Lebanon as it constitutes a violation of resolution 1701," Syria's official news agency Sana said late Thursday. Annan is expected to meet with Syrian President Bashar Al Assad on Friday in order to continue his tour of the region where he is urging nations to support the Security Council resolution that ended the 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah on August 14. Israel says it will lift the blockade when international troops are deployed to the country and the UN force guards all smuggling routes, including the Syria-Lebanon border. Syria says it will close the border if troops are deployed along its border.
