Russia To Decide On Sending Troops To Lebanon Next Week
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - The Russian government will decide whether it will send troops to Lebanon in the coming days, the Foreign Ministry in Moscow said Friday. Russia, one of the members of the quartet that has been mediating the Middle East in recent years had yet to declare if they would be sending troops to Lebanon. "Russia is continuing to study the issue in relation to a mechanism for its involvement in a peacekeeping mission," Mikhail Kamynin, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said. "A decision will come in a few days," he added. The European Union has pledged up to 7,000 troops for the revamped United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon. Moscow has been an important member of the international community in resolving conflicts in the region in the past and the Lebanese would welcome their participation in the UN force. "We look forward to seeing a real neutral country participate in protecting us from Israel," Nazir Ghanem, a project officer at a local NGO, said on Friday. He expects Russia to supply some troops, which "will give more faith in the international community to the Lebanese people," he added. The Russian government will meet next week to discuss the nature of their participation in Lebanon.
