Nasrallah Celebrates Birthday Underground
Ryan R. Jones - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Jerusalem, Israel (AHN) - An Israeli military court decided on Thursday that thirty Palestinian lawmakers arrested by Israel will go on trial in December for their membership in a banned terrorist organization. Among the prisoners are five Palestinian Authority cabinet ministers and the speaker of the Palestinian parliament. They are all members of Hamas, which scored an overwhelming victory in January's PA election. The group is also responsible for a large share of the tens of thousands of terrorist attacks carried out against Israelis over the past decade. Terrorists affiliated with Hamas abducted an Israel Defense Forces soldier along the Gaza border on June 25, leading to a sharp increase in violence there. A day earlier, visiting UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan told PLO Chairman Mahmoud Abbas that he supports efforts to forge a unity government with Hamas. The AP quoted Annan as saying, "This is a very important process." Abbas and top Hamas officials hope that a unity government would end crippling US and Israeli-led economic sanctions imposed following the terror group's electoral win.
