EC, UNDP Join Hands To Tackle Natural Disasters In Bangladesh
Siddique Islam - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Dhaka, Bangladesh (AHN) - The European Commission (EC) has signed a contribution agreement with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to fund the Bangladesh Disaster Preparedness Project. Acting Head of the EC Delegation Anthony Goodwin and UNDP Resident Representative Renata Lok Dessallien signed the agreement at the European Commission delegation office in Dhaka on Wednesday. Under the agreement, the EC will contribute 8.9 million Euros as grant to the project, which has been conceived within the framework of the Comprehensive Disaster Management Program (CDMP) currently being implemented by the Ministry of Food and Disaster Management of Bangladesh, a press statement says. In 2004, the Bangladesh government, UNDP and Department for International Development (UK) launched the first phase of the Comprehensive Disaster Management Program (CDMP). The program was primarily designed to assist in the paradigm shift from disaster relief to disaster risk reduction in the country. The EC has now become a part of this initiative by providing the grant to support three key areas - earthquake vulnerability and needs assessment, disaster management and information network and livelihood security - hazard awareness.
