China, Iran Pursue Diplomacy To End Nuclear Conflict
Jacob Cherian - All Headline News Staff Writer Beijing, China (AHN) - The Chinese foreign ministry said on Wednesday that Iran and China would resolve the nuclear crisis by looking towards a diplomatic solution. Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing met with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Beijing. The Chinese foreign ministry made a brief statement on its website stating, "Both sides exchanged views on developments in the Iranian nuclear issue, and stressed that it should be appropriately resolved through diplomatic negotiations." The U.N. Security Council has informed Iran that it could face sanctions if it does not halt work on atomic fuel by August 31. While Tehran says that its goal is solely to use nuclear energy for electricity, the West seems to think that Iran has more ambitious plans of making nuclear weapons. The U.S. has said that it will take a tough stand on Iran if it does not comply with U.N. demands. However, Russia and China, strong mercantile partners of Iran are hesitant to use sanctions, thereby making it difficult for the move to pass on the Council floor.
