Jews In Germany Speak Out
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - Germany's Jewish population have reacted disdainfully to Germany's role in the war between Hezbollah and Israel, which ended August 14. Chancellor Angela Merkel has distanced herself from remarks by a cabinet minister on Israel's offensive on Lebanon. Ulrich Wilhelm, a government spokesman, said Overseas Development Minister Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zuel was not speaking for the chancellor when she called for an investigation into claims that Israel used carpet bombs in their war campaign. "It was not an opinion reached after consultation with the government. It is not the opinion of the chancellor," he added. The comment made by the minister was based on allegations from Human Rights Watch that Israel used cluster bombs in their war on Lebanon. The Central Council of Jews in Germany has accused the minister of bias and stirring anti-Jewish sentiments across the globe. Merkel is due to meet with the president of the council, Charlotte Knobloch, on Wednesday night with the hope of clearing up the dispute.
