Lebanon To Compensate Families With Destroyed Homes
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - The Lebanese government has said it would pay families whose homes were destroyed in the 34-day war with Israel with 40,000 dollars. This comes after families were given $12,000 from Hezbollah for compensation. Lebanon's Prime Minister, Fouad Siniora said on Wednesday his government would give compensation for destroyed homes. He acknowledged the fact that the Lebanese government had been slow in reacting following the devastation inflicted by the bombing campaign to root out Hezbollah. He did not provide a number of homes destroyed by Israel in the south but said that the compensation package would include a base of $33,000 plus an extra $7,000 for furniture. He spoke before heading to Sweden to attend an emergency aid conference. The Prime Minister said that 130,000 homes had been destroyed or damaged in Lebanon during the war. This figure included 50,000 homes in Beirut's southern suburbs. The war between the Jewish state and the guerilla movement Hezbollah ended August 14.
