Chavez Hails Syria As A Hero In Arab World
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called Syria a hero for Arabs on Wednesday. He joined fellow anti-American President Bashar Al Assad in denouncing what they referred to as America's "hegemony". "We have the same position: we reject the American empire's imperialism and attempts at hegemony," Chavez said during his first visit to Syria aimed at consolidating relations between the two countries. "We have the same political vision. We are two countries and two peoples resisting and facing imperialist aggression," he said at the start of his two-day visit. "This is an historic visit," said Assad, paying homage to firebrand Chavez's "great positions" and his "feelings toward despoiled peoples". The two leaders denounced the UN Security Council resolutions for the Middle East, calling them products of the United State's hegemony. Assad cited last May's Resolution 1680, which called for the establishment of diplomatic relations between Syria and Lebanon and the finalization of borders between the two nations. "If sovereign states reject [US hegemony] and work toward law and justice, they can help bring about stability in our region and in the world," the Syrian President said.
