Japan Arrests Executives For Selling Equipment Used In Nuke Development
Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Tokyo, Japan (AHN) - The president of Mitutoyo Corp. is arrested on suspicion of exporting Malaysia to equipment that can be used in making nuclear weapons. Trade Ministry official Hiroyuki Murakami says police also raided an Iranian trading company called Seian. Police arrested the president of Mitutoyo Corp., along with four executives and employees, for allegedly violating foreign trade control laws He says Mitutoyo is suspected of illegally selling high-tech measuring devices to its subsidiary in Malaysia in 2001. The same equipment was sold by Mitutoyo to Seian, a company believed to be connected with Iran's nuclear program. Reports say the Iranian trading firm is suspected of exporting sensitive equipment to Iran's military and defense ministry between 1984 and 1992. Police say the equipment sold by Mitutoyo to Seian could be used to enrich uranium, a key element in developing nuclear weapons.
