Hundreds Of Palestinians Demand Welfare Payments
Yvonne Lee - All Headline News Staff Reporter Gaza City, Gaza Strip (AHN) - Hundreds of unemployed Palestinians clashed with police as they demanded welfare payments while surrounding the parliament building in Gaza City. Some 300 laborers waved empty plates and pita bread as they chanted, "Oh, for shame, we are starving." Some protestors tried to break through a police cordon in order to enter the building. Others threw rocks, slighly injuring a cameraman. The beleaguered Hamas-led government became broke after international aid was cut off in March. The U.S. and European nations have demanded that Hamas recognize Israel and renounce violence. However, the militant government has refused to give-in to their demands. The Hamas government has not been able to pay wages to 165,000 employees of the Palestinian authority or hand out welfare payments. On Monday, Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh committed to one-time payments of $100 to 50,000 workers. Hamas has been unable to quell growing unrest over its inability to make more than occasional payments to workers.
