Two Undersea Quakes Hit Southeastern Indonesia
Yvonne Lee - All Headline News Staff Reporter (AHN) - Southeastern Indonesia is struck by two undersea earthquakes on Tuesday. The U.S. Geological Survey reports that one quake hit south of North Sulawesi and measured 5.6 in magnitude. This was followed by aftershocks in the same area. Later, another quake with a magnitude of 5.1 hit northeast of Tanimbar Islands in Maluku province. There were no immediate reports of casualties. Initially, the first quake was thought to have a magnitude of 6.4, triggering a tsunami warning. However, this was later withdrawn. In July, a 7.7-magnitude undersea quake off Java resulted in a tsunami that killed more than 650 people. Even more devastating was a 6.3 magnitude earthquake that struck near the city of Yogyakarta on May 27. More than 5,800 people were killed. In December 2004, more than 130,000 people were killed when a tsunami hit Indonesia.
