Police Seize Hot Meat From China At Port Of Manila
Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Manila, Philippines (AHN) - The police on Tuesday seized four trucks full of banned frozen meat from China at the Port of Manila in the Philippines. Police Senior Supt. Francisco Don Montenegro of the Philippine National Police anti-smuggling task force said, "They're banned items. This would fall under unfair trade competition because they would be sold at lower prices compared to the prevailing market value." Investigators say the value of the "hot meat" could reach $220,000. They said the vans' seals were still intact, meaning their contents were not inspected by examiners from the Bureau of Customs. A fifth van, which the police believe was carrying misdeclared or undervalued goods, was also apprehended. The police are now preparing charges of smuggling and violation of the Tariffs and Customs Code of the Philippines against the broker and the importer of the shipment. A statement of the task force said, "The Task Force is also looking into the possibility that some customs personnel are in cahoots with the people involved in the shipment of these prohibited goods, considering that the seals of the container vans are still intact, meaning they did not pass through the supposed 100 percent examination at the Bureau of Customs."
