UNHCR Bringing Aid To South Lebanon
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) has been carrying tents, blankets, mattresses and cooking kits into southern Lebanon on a daily basis. So far, at least 17 convoys have arrived in the southern portion of the country devastated by the 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah. "Distribution methods vary with the location, but generally we deliver items to a village and the distribution is organized by local officials to make sure the aid supplies reach the most needy," the UNHCR said in a statement. The teams are operating across the south, with warehouses in Beirut, Sidon and Tyre. The goal is to give those people that lost the most the first opportunity to receive aid from the UN organization. With an air and sea blockade still in effect it is proving difficult to have supplies sent in from abroad. Also challenging the organization is the fact that many families whose homes were destroyed are staying with relatives in confined spaces creating difficulties in tracking down who remained and who left the country.
