Villagers Want The UN In Lebanon
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - Lebanese villagers are looking toward the United Nations for protection. Many of the UN peacekeepers are placed in between Israel and villages suspected of housing Hezbollah fighters. Outside the village of Marwahin, a few hundred meters from the Israeli border, a group of 23 Ghanaian peacekeepers attempt to maintain a tenuous peace. The villagers have come to expect the UN to protect them from any future onslaught of Israeli forces. Israeli shells destroyed many of the buildings in the village during the 34-day war. Now, with a ceasefire in place, the villagers are hoping that the UN will step up and take over the void left by Hezbollah. The 34-day war that ended August 14, cost over 1,000 Lebanese lives, mostly civilians, and over 100 Israelis, mostly soldiers.
