S. Korea Says Pyongyang Is Capable Of Testing Nuclear Weapons
Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Seoul, South Korea (AHN) - South Korea's main spy agency said on Monday that North Korea has the facility to test-fire a nuclear weapon and said these facilities were on a standby mode, awaiting orders from Pyongyang. Rep. Shin Ki-nam head of the Parliamentary Intelligence Committee and a ranking government official both quoted King Seung-kyu as telling a close-door meeting that there is a possibility the North would test a nuclear weapon. They quoted Kim as saying, "Facilities for a nuclear test are always on standby and considering the North's capability, the possibility (of a test) is always open." But the Intelligence Chief did not give any indication of an imminent test-fire. Kim reportedly told the committee, "Currently, however, there is no direct sign or movement that North Korea is preparing a nuclear test." He was also quoted as saying that his office discovered in the late 1990's that Pyongyang was digging a tunnel in the northeast that would give them access to the heartland of Seoul should a war erupt. The agency is keeping a close watch into the digging, he said. Cables have reportedly been seen in the region but Kim said it was difficult to ascertain if these were related to a nuclear tests.
