17 Die In Afghan Suicide Blast
Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Kandahar, Afghanistan (AHN) - At least 17 people were killed and 50 others were reportedly wounded when a powerful explosion ripped through a crowded bazaar in the Helmand province capital of Lashkar Gah in an apparent suicide bombing attack. Witnesses claim seeing a man with bombs strapped to his body grabbing Khan Mohammad, a prominent businessman who also served as former police chief, then detonated the explosives. Helmand province spokesman Haji Muhaidin Khan told AFP the attack was perpetuated by "enemies of Afghanistan," a term normally used to refer to guerrillas with links to the extremist Taliban movement. He said, "A suicide bomber detonated inside a crowded market in Lashkar Gah. As a result 17 people were martyred, 47 were wounded. Fifteen among the wounded are kids." The Taliban regularly carry out suicide attacks in Afghanistan mostly targeting soldiers with the Afghan army, ISAF or a separate U.S.-led coalition that is conducting counter-insurgency operations in the country. ISAF commander Lieutenant General David Richards adds, "It exposes yet again the hypocrisy of the Taliban who claim to act for the people but behave in a way that shows they are worse than vicious criminals."
