Fire Breaks Out In Russia's Historic Trinity Cathedral
Yvonne Lee - All Headline News Staff Reporter St. Petersburg, Russia (AHN) - A fire breaks out in Russia's Trinity Cathedral, destroying the central dome of the 19th century structure. A duty officer at the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry says the fire burned through scaffolding outside the blue dome, which collapsed. One of four smaller cupolas surrounding the dome was also destroyed. Firefighters struggled to save the three other cupolas, as clerics rushed to retrieve religious icons. A helicopter was employed to battle the fire by dumping water on the historic building. St. Petersburg emergency department spokeswoman Lyudmila Rubasova says there were no reports of injuries. She says the fire was extinguished about four hours after it started. She adds that one of the three remaining cupolas was damaged. St. Petersburg emergency department chief Leonid Belyayev says the fire may have broken out on the scaffolding outside of the church, which was undergoing restoration. The church was consecrated in 1835. The main dome was the second-largest wooden cupola in Europe. Writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky was married there.
