Syria Must Not Avoid Investigation
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - France has warned Syria to be careful of using the conflict in Lebanon as a way out of the ongoing investigation into the murder of Lebanon's former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri. French Foreign Minister Phillippe Douste-Blazy told RTL radio on Friday that Syria cannot use the current conflict to avoid the investigation. "Syria must not, through this Israeli-Lebanese conflict, return to the international community and remove itself from the inquiry," Douste-Blazy said. Former Prime Minister Hariri was assassinated in February 2005 in a massive car bomb. Syria has been a central suspect in the involvement of the Prime Minister's death. "[Syria] is a country that has its leaders fingered by the international commission of inguiry - which aims to find out exactly who killed a number of political and civilian personalities, parliamentarians and former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri," the Foreign Minister added. Damascus has denied any involvement in Hariri's murder despite a United Nations report that said that Syria was responsible at some level. The report called for further investigation into Syria's role in the killing.
