Lebanon's Success Could Bring Troops To Gaza
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - Lebanon could be a testing ground for international forces, Italian Foreign Minister Massimo D'Alema was quoted in Haaretz, Friday. He said that if the ceasefire holds and the deployment of multinational forces proves successful, troops should be sent to the Gaza Strip. "The idea of sending UN troops to the Gaza Strip is currently being aired. But I think that if things go well in Lebanon, a similar positive process could also begin in the Gaza Strip," he told the Israeli newspaper. The comments come as Israel continues to wage an offensive in Gaza since Palestinian militants killed two Israeli soldiers and kidnapped a third. D'Alema feels that the presence of an international force could help "bolster the Palestinian government." Palestinian groups are in the process of negotiating the formation of a unity government in Jordan despite the continued military action of the Israelis in Gaza. They have detained numerous Palestinian government officials in recent weeks.
