Jumblatt Tells Druze To Stop Renting From Shiites
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - A source near Druze leader Walid Jumblatt said that there has been a call to stop giving money to Shiites. It was reported that Jumblatt made the comments to his inner circle of Druze leaders. "[Jumblatt] told us that we should stop renting [apartments] from Shiites in Lebanon," the source, who asked not to be named, said. "It is really scary because these are the same tactics that have caused so much trouble in Lebanon over the years," he continued. Until now, the Druze leader has remained calm publicly, however, these comments come as unsubstantiated reports say that the Christian militia has received weapons in northern Lebanon. While these reports have not been confirmed, it highlights the continued tensions that remain in the country despite the initial unity following the 34-day war between Israel and Hizbollah. "I hope these are just people trying to gain power, but in our history it is hard to believe that it is this simple ... I fear for the country now, but I doubt a civil war will happen," the Druze man said.
