Indonesian Official:Resolving Israel-Palestinian Conflict Would Diminish Terrorism
Josephine Roque - All Headline News Staff Writer Jakarta, Indonesia (AHN) - Indonesia's foreign minister said that working out the Middle East crisis, specifically the Israeli and the Palestinian dispute, would help decrease terrorism threats globally. "Once the problem of Palestine is solved, much of the wind in the sails of international terrorists will come down," said Hasan Wirajuda, whose country has also been subject to bombings linked to the al-Qaeda militant group Jemaah Islamiyah. The attacks have killed more than 240 people in Indonesia. Indonesia has been a known supporter of the Palestinian independence movement and does not maintain diplomatic relations with Israel. The country vocally opposed the Jewish state during the conflict in Lebanon, and had volunteered to even release front line troops. "My view is that terrorism ... is largely driven by two sets of grievances," Wirajuda said, noting that the first had to do with domestic issues, "political empowerment, social justice and lack of economic opportunities." "The second set of grievances is international and has a great deal to do with Palestine," he said.
