200 Students In Chile Arrested After Clashing With Police
Yvonne Lee - All Headline News Staff Reporter Santiago, Chile (AHN) - Student protesters clash with police in Chile, resulting in more than 200 arrests and dozens of injuries. About 2,000 students marched in Santiago and elsewhere over what they say is the government's lack of progress on education reforms. Protesters threw stones at security forces, while police used tear gas and water cannons against the students. Over the last few months, students have engaged in major protests throughout Chile. About 700,000 students participated in a series of strikes and street rallies. They halted the protests in June after the government agreed to some of their demands. President Michelle Bachelet promised to commit extra money to repair run-down school and help underprivileged students. She also ordered the creation of reform commission. However, some students are frustrated with the how quickly the reforms are being instituted. One 15-year-old demonstrator tells BBC News, "They are doing some work, but much too slowly, and that's not what they promised."
