Israel, Hezbollah Exchange Fire In Lebanon
Ryan R. Jones - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Jerusalem, Israel (AHN) - Israeli forces and Hezbollah gunmen exchanged fire for about three hours in southern Lebanon Wednesday afternoon, with Israeli artillery entering into the fray that centered on the border town of Shebaa, adjacent to the disputed Shebaa Farms area Beirut claims is occupied Lebanese territory. The fighting occurred despite the deployment earlier in the week of Lebanese army forces in the town. Lebanese military sources who spoke to the AP claimed the Israeli fire was unprovoked, and said several artillery shells landed near their positions in Shebaa. Elsewhere in southern Lebanon, an Israeli soldier was killed and two more were wounded Tuesday night when their tank rolled over a land mine planted by Israel to prevent Hezbollah infiltrations. Israel Defense Forces (IDF) officials cited by Ynet estimated the incident was the result of a navigational error, as the location of the minefield was known to forces operating in the area. Three Lebanese soldiers also died Wednesday morning when unexploded Israeli ordnance they were trying to defuse suddenly detonated.
