Syria Rejects Troops On Its Border
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - Syria has rejected a call for the deployment of United Nations troops along the border between Syria and Lebanon. Syrian President Bashar Assad said that such a move would create un-needed animosity between the two countries. "This is an infringement on Lebanese sovereignty and a hostile position," Assad said in an interview with Dubai Television. Assad continued to urge the Lebanese government to adhere to its responsibilities and not take any action that would sabotage the relations between the two countries. Israel has demanded that UN troops be in place along the border between Syria and Lebanon in order to stem the flow of weapons, which the Jewish state believes are coming from Syria. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told UN emissary Terje Roed-Larsen that one of the conditions for lifting the blockade currently imposed on Lebanon was the deployment of a multinational force along the Syrian border and at Rafiq Hariri International Airport.
