Egypt's State-Owned Press Attacks Syria
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - An Egyptian state-owned newspaper on Wednesday said Syrian President Bashar Assad committed "massacres" in Lebanon. In an editorial in Al Gumhuriya addressed to the Syrian ambassador in Cairo, said "the Egyptian army has done much to save you over the course of history." It continued to say that "while your heroic army, protector of the homeland, has a weighty record of Lebanese massacres ... and you have killed thousands of your citizens in Hama and Aleppo when they rose up against the regime of father Assad." Political tensions between the two Arab states have continued to rise since Assad criticized Arab leaders who failed to support Hizbollah during the 34-day war between the militant group and Israel. Egypt and Jordan have both condemned Hizbollah for its actions following the militant groups abduction of two Israeli soldiers on July 12, which precipitated the month-long offensive of Lebanon by the Jewish state.
