Flights To and From Lebanon Must Go Through Jordan
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - Middle East Airlines announced that is has resumed flights to all international destinations. However, any flight leaving Rafiq Hariri International Airport is required by Israel to stop in Jordan for a security check, the Jordan Times reported. The directive is in line with the international security inspection codes followed by airports worldwide, said Director of the Jordan Civil Aviation Authority Captain Suleiman Obeidat, in the newspaper. This means that all flights in and out of Beirut must be routed through Amman. Passengers would remain on board while a secondary inspection is conducted. No specific reason was given for the decision except that Israel set the Amman stop as a condition for resuming flights. MEA and Royal Jordanian Airlines are the only carriers currently flying to Beirut. The first commercial flights into Lebanon occurred last Thursday, despite a continued Israeli blockade on Lebanon following the eruption of violence between the Jewish state and the militant organization Hizbollah.
