DNA From U.S. Marine's Blood Sample Matches DNA In Rape Victim's Underwear
Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Makati City, Philippines (AHN) - Senior Inspector Edmar dela Torre of the Philippine National Police Crime Laboratory told the court on Thursday that the DNA profile from the blood sample taken from a U.S. Marine suspected or raping a Filipina matched those taken from the woman's underwear. In his testimony, dela Torre said the results of his tests were "99.999 percent accurate." During direct examination by prosecution lawyer Hazel Valdez, the medico-legal said, "The male DNA profile from the underwear (of the complainant) is that of Daniel Smith." On July 25, the court upheld a petition by the prosecution panel to take blood samples from Lance Corporal Daniel Smith to determine if it will match with the DNA profile found in the underwear of "Nicole" which she used on November 1, the night of the alleged rape. "Nicole" is the court-appointed name for the victim. The result of the DNA or deoxyribonucleic acid test results were dated August 15. Lawyer for the defense Ricardo Diaz tried to discredit the results made by the forensic expert and raised the possibility that the samples taken from "Nicole's," underwear could have been contaminated because it was taken a few days after the alleged rape. The prosecution panel was happy with dela Torre's testimony and said his statement would solidify their case. Prosecution lawyer Evalyn Ursua to |
