Jones - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Jerusalem, Israel (AHN) - Israel is demanding full compliance with UN Security Council Resolution 1701, even as Beirut this week struck a deal with Hezbollah allowing the terror group to maintain its armed presence south of the Litani River. Jerusalem on Wednesday was increasingly concerned that it would be the only party held to account after Hezbollah openly declared it had no intention to disarm or leave southern Lebanon, and both Beirut and the UN said their forces would not enforce the agreement with military might. A senior government official told Ynet that Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni's meeting with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan Wednesday focused on clarifying "Israel's unequivocal demand to fully implement the Security Council resolution." He added, "Israel demands that the Security Council and the Lebanese government deal with the problem created by Hezbollah's declaration." Israeli ministers warned that as a full party to the ceasefire, Beirut was fully responsible for compliance on its side of the border, and that violations that resulted in attacks on Israeli soil would bring a crushing military response against Lebanon's infrastructure.
